The comeback film of JoshLia (Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto) is about how ex-lovers navigate feelings of anguish and deep affection with someone who once held a special place in their hearts.
Un/Happy for You overcomes a few narratively tropey choices that don't really seem to work in its grand scheme of things thanks to mature writing [...], fantastic visual storytelling by the team of Noel Teehankee, and great acting by leads Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia. (A)
”Watching Un/Happy For You is like digging into a deep, exposed wound simply because of how much history there is to tap between the lead stars.
”Young love, while exhilarating, can falter under life’s complexities. “Un/Happy for You” beautifully illustrates this transition, showing how an all-consuming passion can evolve into something more nuanced and bittersweet.
”The maturity of the two, Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto, brings out the best in them portraying this emotional and heartfelt film. (4/5)
”Un/Happy for You really hits all the right notes and is another showcase for Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto’s talents and star power. (4/5)
”Mas lumakas yung story sa back half nito. Madaming eksena that I related, that I connected and it made me realize things pagdating sa love at pag let go. (Maganda)
”By the end, you’d be unhappy with the script but still happy with JoshLia’s performance. The number of heartfelt scenes are enough to make this movie a decent comeback and an emotional tribute for their loveteam. (2.54/5)
”Director Petersen Vargas is very well-versed with rom-coms, and he handled this one expertly. (7/10)
”In a reunion within a reunion plot, the tackling of characters became delicate. At some point, the film made us ask ourselves—are we believing in Juancho and Zy not because of their story, but because of JoshLia’s?
”JoshLia is so good though. It delivers the tears and growth is growth. If only they mixed everything together better, it’d be as good as a creamy & spicy Bicol express. (3/5)
”Despite its flaws, the ending of Un/Happy For You drew me back in. In my view, it sends a message that too much love, too much spice so to say, ruins a dish. (3/5)
”The chemistry fills in the gaps, and there are plenty of gaps to fill. (3/5)
”A decently made rom-com that, despite its flaws, is quite effective, all thanks to the explosive chemistry of Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto. (3/5)
”[...] even with its shortcomings, Un/Happy for You remains a worthwhile drama, and Garcia’s brilliant portrayal of limerence is the film’s true saving grace. (3/5)
”[...] If not Joshlia, magwowork kaya itong pelikulang ito or may nostalgia lang dahil sa history ng Joshlia in the past? (3/5)
